Community & outreach
The Freewheel Project is dedicated to increasing access to bicycle transportation for all people. If you have an idea for a program or partnership not listed, feel free to email us! We work with a diverse group of organizations and businesses to forge impactful relationships that benefit the community.
Free service for kids
Children's bike donations
We offer Free Service on youth bicycles (age 13 and under) when children are present.
During our Saturday Bike Clinics, volunteers learn and practice repair skills on kid's bikes and other project bikes. Finished bikes have been donated to children at Metcalfe Elementary and at the SW Advocacy Group's Bike Giveaway events.
Bicycle University is a six-week kids' intensive mechanics program taught by expert bicycle mechanic Gary Sinkus. Kids meet at the shop on Saturday afternoons to wrench on their future set of wheels. Upon completion of the program, the kids take home a full set of tools to continue maintaining their new bicycle.
This program is brand new and in need of sponsors and donations. To sponsor a child or donate tools, please email Gary Sinkus at:
bikes 4 vets
The Freewheel Project has partnered with Diann Dimitri's service program, Bikes 4 Vets. Bikes 4 Vets supports local veterans by providing bicycles, bicycle lights and locks, and repair services. These bikes empower veterans by increasing their access to transportation.
During Saturday business hours, we offer a work trade program. Work trade allows customers with limited means to exchange their time and service for a monthly store credit of $25. This credit can be applied to used parts, our affordable bicycle selection, or service.
Team Pleasant is a group of cyclists, headed by Joe Ergle, that take riding seriously. Sponsored by The Freewheel Project and other community businesses, we are able to greatly subsidize the costs of racing, encouraging more participation in the sport of cycling. Our shop maintains team bicycles at little to no-cost.
